What this site, the podcast archive API, and the plugin for AI assistants such as ChatGPT collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have.

Who we are

Studying Law Around the World is an independent podcast and learning platform about legal education and careers around the world. This policy covers this website and the listener features on it: accounts, learning tracks, the listener passport, CPD records, and the AI assistant.

It does not cover other websites we link to, such as Substack or the podcast apps where you listen.

Information you give us

Account details: your name and email address when you create an account, and your role on the platform.

Your learning activity: episodes you mark as listened to, progress, badges, certificates, CPD hours, your queue, bookmarks, and notes.

Community contributions: your display name, jurisdiction, practice area, whether you are a student, and any comments you post.

Messages you send us: anything sent through the contact form, episode feedback (including a rating), and the book sign-up form (name, email, and message).

Questions you ask: search terms, and questions sent to the AI assistant.

Donations

If you choose to support the podcast, your payment is handled entirely by Stripe. We receive confirmation that a payment was made, including the amount and the email address you used for the receipt. We never receive or store your card number.

Information collected automatically

Analytics: pages you visit, how you arrived, your approximate location, device, browser, and language. Collected through Google Analytics and our own platform analytics.

Cookies and local storage: a sign-in session, display preferences, and whether you have already seen a prompt such as the newsletter invitation. You can clear or block these in your browser, though some features may stop working if you do.

Server logs: basic technical records kept by our hosting provider for security and troubleshooting.

Our newsletter

The newsletter is published through Substack. When you subscribe from this site, you are taken to Substack, which handles your email address under its own privacy policy. We do not store newsletter email addresses on this site.

How we use your information

To run your account and keep your learning progress, so your passport, certificates, and CPD records are correct when you come back.

To show community contributions to other listeners, and to reply to your messages and questions.

To understand which episodes, tracks, and features are useful, so we can improve them.

To keep the site secure and prevent abuse, and to meet our legal obligations.

Our AI features send your question, together with the relevant episode text or transcript, to a third-party AI provider so an answer can be generated. Please do not include personal or confidential information in those questions.

What we do not do

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We do not run advertising networks on this site, and we do not use your data to build advertising profiles.

Who we share it with

Service providers who help us run the platform, and only for the purpose they were engaged for: our hosting, database, and authentication provider; Stripe for donations; Substack for the newsletter; Google Analytics for traffic measurement; and AI providers used for assistant answers, episode analysis, and transcription.

We may also disclose information where the law requires it, or where it is necessary to protect the rights and safety of the podcast, our guests, and our listeners.

Public episode pages include information about our guests, such as their name, biography, country, and profile image, which they agreed to share for that episode.

The ChatGPT plugin, MCP API, and other AI assistants

The podcast archive is available to AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Cursor through a public MCP server at /api/mcp. It is read only: it can search and read published podcast information, and it cannot create, change, or delete anything, send messages, or act on your behalf.

What it receives: only the questions, search terms, and filters the assistant sends to the archive, plus the technical information any web request carries, such as an IP address and a timestamp. It does not receive your ChatGPT account details, your name, your email address, or anything from your account on this site, and using it requires no sign-in and sets no cookies.

What we keep: the plugin does not store your prompts or the answers in this app's database. Those requests are handled by our hosting platform, which keeps standard request logs that we use for security, troubleshooting, and abuse prevention. Those logs can include the tool that was called, the arguments sent with it, the time, and the IP address, and they are kept only for a limited period. We do not use them for profiling or advertising.

The analytics on this website measure visits to the website. They do not record what you ask an AI assistant inside ChatGPT.

Questions asked to the AI assistant on this website

If you ask the AI assistant on this website a question while signed in, we store that question together with the episodes it recommended, so the assistant can improve and so we can see which topics listeners are looking for. You can ask us to delete those questions at any time through the contact page.

How long we keep it

Learning activity and contributions are kept while your account is active. You can delete your account from your dashboard, which removes your account and the personal activity attached to it. Some records may remain for a short period in backups, or where the law requires us to keep them.

Your choices and rights

You can review and change your account details in your dashboard, delete your account there, or contact us to ask for a copy of your information, a correction, or a deletion. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights over your personal information, and we will honour requests that apply to you.

Children

This site and podcast are made for adults and for students at the post-secondary level. They are not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 16.

Security and changes to this policy

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including limiting who on our side can see it. No website can promise perfect security, so please use a strong, unique password and let us know if you think your account has been misused.

We may update this policy as the platform changes. The date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised, and significant changes will be announced on the site.

Questions about this policy?

Send us a note through the contact page and we will get back to you. If you would like your information corrected or deleted, you can also do that yourself from your dashboard.
